In honor of our Microphone Mission, a new effort to bring better mics to your recording studio, we've started assembling some incredible microphone packages filled with industry standards, personal favorites and more. For this particular bundle, Vintage King co-owner Mike Nehra has assembled a group of four microphones that act as a one-stop shop for recording some of the best drum tracks you'll ever hear. Time-tested classics like the Coles 4038 and Neumann U 47 FET Collector's Edition pair well with the modified SM57 design of the Granelli Audio Labs G5790.
Coles 4038 Ribbon Mics Stereo Pair
The Coles 4038 Studio Ribbon Microphone is a British Broadcasting (BBC) design for broadcasting and recording applications. It is used where a clear smooth wide range frequency response, absence of transient distortion and relatively high sensitivity is essential. The 4038 is a proven performer and is in use around the world by broadcasting networks, as well as top engineers and studios on hit recordings.
Frequency response of the 4038 is exceptionally flat from 30 to 20,000 Hz and throughout this range the shape of the bi-directional (figure of eight) polar response is maintained substantially constant both in the horizontal and vertical planes, giving a natural sonic quality with smooth frequency response.
Neumann U 47 FET Collector's Edition
The U 47 FET is a condenser mic with FET 80 circuitry and a cardiod directional characteristic. Employing a K47 capsule, the microphone is a double large-diaphragm capsule that will have a slight boost above 2kHz. The mic features a low-cut filter that is switchable and can reduce the cutoff frequency from 40Hz to 140Hz, while the attenuation switch can lower transmission levels by 10dB. In an effort to stop overloading, the output signal can also be lowered, thanks to a switch on the bottom of the microphone.
Granelli Audio Labs G5790
The Granelli Audio Labs G5790 is a real SM57 modified to turn 90 degrees. Granelli Audio Labs uses brand new Shure® SM57s and inserts a custom-made aluminum part with an acoustically-engineered internal sound path. The result is a microphone that maintains the SM57's renowned durability and familiar tone while increasing functionality.
